Semmering is simply inseparable from the feeling of living a winter in the mountains. We can return to the world of bygone times, to its unique atmosphere at the end of strong conversations and walks, which was marked by art and culture.
The history of the southern railway, the Südbahn, was written by bold visionaries, great engineers, powerful rulers and risk-taking investors. One of them - and perhaps the most important of them - was the knight Carl von Ghega. His face can be found on the twenty-shilling banknote issued in 1967. The reverse side of the banknote is decorated with perhaps his most famous enterprise: the Southern Railway and the huge 184 m long and 46 m high Kalte Rinne viaduct with a panorama of Semmering. Anyone who wants to see the picturesque view of the old twenty bank in reality can go on a tour to the lookout point called the "Twenty-Shilling View".
Carl Ghega was a hero who accomplished a task considered impossible at the time: railway crossing the 895 m high Semmerin-pass, where the steepness of the handrails reaches 20-25‰. With this, in 1854, he not only made history, but also made Austria a world leader in the construction of long and steep mountain railways. At the same time, it created an opportunity for the noble to travel comfortably to his summer residence. The railway serving the "conquest of the south" has become a tourist attraction, which touches the visitor with its lovely charm even today, just like in the past. It is no wonder that an entire museum was dedicated to its creator, Ghega.

- Program
You can board our train at Budapest-Keleti and Budapest-Kelenföld railway stations. After taking the seats, we present the day’s program, our colleagues distribute Semmering maps and information materials to our guests. On the train, we share interesting stories about the Semmering Pass and the Semmering Railway, which runs through it and is now a World Heritage Site.
The dining car and the bar car are in operation for the entire duration of the trip. You can also join the journey at Tatabánya and Győr stations.
You can get off our train at Gloggnitz, Payerbach, Breitenstein, Semmering and Mürzzusclag stations, where our guests can spend their free time individually until the return trip. From Semmering station, we offer a free walk to the cable car leading to the Hirschenkogel. The approximately 30-minute walk ends at the bottom station of the cable car, from where our guests can continue their program individually in the direction they like.
When planning your individual program, please inquire about the opening times and prices of the ski slopes, museums, viewpoints, lifts and other attractions you want to visit. Before the excursion, please check the expected weather of the chosen landing place and prepare accordingly.

Continental dining carContinental Lounge & BarMenüMenüIt was originally a Trans Europe Express (TEE) dining car, equipped with all the luxuries of the 1960s then available. The TEE trains were the forerunners of today’s EuroCity trains, connecting the major cities of Western Europe by providing special services. The dining car is open for guests during the entire trip with an a la carte menu suitable for the time of day, which includes both meat and vegetarian dishes. The meals served in the dining car are always prepared by our chef on the train from the freshest ingredients.The Continental Salonz bar car, as the train’s social point, is an excellent place to get to know our fellow passengers and make new friends.
